RWJBarnabas Health's Commitment to Racial Equity

  • RWJBarnabas Health, the largest academic health care system in New Jersey, has amplified its efforts to address equity and systemic racism to promote an antiracist culture throughout the organization and the communities it serves. Ending Racism Together focuses on creating racial, ethnic and cultural equity, prioritizing those communities that are most disenfranchised and experience poor health, and social, economic, and educational outcomes due to the generational effects of racism.

  • Barry H. Ostrowsky, President and Chief Executive Officer of RWJBarnabas Health, in partnership with the Corporate Board of Trustees, recognized that the system needed to do much more to strengthen its commitment to equity in order to improve outcomes and eliminate health disparities.

Our Framework for Strategic Change: Ending Racism Together

A Framework for Strategic Change (January 1, 2022 – December 31, 2023)

RWJBarnabas Health has created a comprehensive plan, operating in one of the most diverse states in the nation. RWJBarnabas Health realized that in order to meet its mission of improving the health of the communities that it serves, it would need to dismantle systemic racism. We have created a comprehensive plan, Ending Racism Together: A Framework for Strategic Change (January 1, 2022 – December 31, 2023).

Sharing Our Stories

RWJBH recognizes that racism in the United States has existed for over four hundred years. One key way that we can seek to dismantle it is by sharing insights and finding common ground. To that end, we have instituted Equitable Encounters: Real talk about Race, created safe places for courageous conversations, and asked that we share our stories through oral and written expression. Hear what others have to say and share your own.

Our Tools

We have developed tools to help advance our work in identifying and evaluating the root causes of racism, bias and discrimination.  If you believe that you or a loved one was treated unjustly solely on the basis of race, ethnicity or culture, please help RWJBarnabas Health as we seek to become an antiracist organization.
