Breast Density

Woman smiling

As of May 1, 2014, New Jersey law requires all women to be notified of their breast density.

Women with dense breasts may be eligible for supplemental examinations which in combination with mammography can increase the ability to detect breast cancer.

  • Breast density is the proportion of breast glandular tissue to fat in a woman’s breast
  • There are four subtypes of breast density :
    Predominately fatty
    Scattered fibroglandular
    Heterogeneously dense
    Extremely dense

Visual or physical breast exams do not indicate whether a woman has dense breast tissue. A radiologist determines the density of a woman’s breast on a mammogram. Your breast density is routinely reported in your mammography report to your referring physician. Your breast density is also now reported in your patient mammography letter.
