Elective Rotations

Our residency program offers multiple elective opportunities during the PGY-2 and PGY-3 years to give sufficient exposure in the various medical subspecialties. Each resident may self-tailor his or her own elective choices, with the aim of achieving sufficient preparation for future career paths after residency.

Inpatient Electives

Cardiology

Description: In this rotation, residents gain experience in various aspects of clinical cardiology. Residents participate in the acute management of acute myocardial infarction (Code STEMI). They also gain exposure to various cardiac procedures (elective and emergent cardiac catheterizations, exercise and nuclear stress tests, transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, EKG interpretation).

Gastroenterology

Description: In this rotation, residents gain experience in various aspects of clinical gastroenterology. Residents are exposed to various procedures (EGD, colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, ERCP, esophageal manometry).

Neurology

Description: In this rotation, residents gain experience in various aspects of clinical neurology. Residents are trained to do a reliable neurologic examination, to synthesize the findings so as to anatomically localize the disease process and to construct a reasonable differential diagnosis and plan of investigation. Residents can attend the offices of the Neurology Specialists of Monmouth County. Residents also participate in acute inpatient management of cerebrovascular accidents (Code STROKE). Residents gain exposure in interpretation of neuroimaging procedures (CT, MRI), electroencephalography, electromyography and lumbar puncture.

Pulmonary Medicine

Description: In this rotation, residents gain experience in various aspects of pulmonary medicine. Residents can attend the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Clinics. Residents also gain exposure to various pulmonary procedures (pulmonary function testing, bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound and biopsy).

Hematology-Oncology

Description: In this rotation, residents gain experience in various aspects of hematology and oncology. Under the supervision of teaching hematologists-oncologists, residents also gain exposure in bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, microscopic interpretation of biopsy slides and initiation of appropriate chemotherapy regimens.

Infectious Disease

Description: In this rotation, residents gain experience in various aspects of infectious disease. They rotate at the HIV clinic. Residents are trained to target suspect pathogens and design appropriate antibiotic regimens. Residents are also involved in the management of protocol-driven approaches to severe sepsis and septic shock (Code SEPSIS).

Nephrology

Description: In this rotation, residents gain experience in various aspects of clinical nephrology. Residents are trained in the management of fluid and electrolyte disorders, acute renal failure and chronic kidney disease. Residents learn the basics of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

Hospitalist Electives

Description: Rotate with the Hospitalist team to learn about clinical documentation and billing, outcome metrics and value based purchasing and medical consultation. Quality and performance improvement will also be emphasized.

Ambulatory Electives

Ambulatory medicine is an integral part of internal medicine training at Monmouth Medical Center. It is an ACGME requirement that training must in ambulatory experience 1/3 of the entire time. Outpatient practice skills are developed primarily at the Monmouth Family Health Center’s continuity medical clinic. In addition, residents may also rotate at various outpatient subspecialty clinics. Ambulatory elective choices include:

  • Allergy and Immunology
  • Endocrinology
  • Rheumatology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Otorhinolaryngology (ENT)
  • Ambulatory Hematology -Oncology
  • Primary Care
  • ED Urgent Care
  • Orthopedics
  • Sports Medicine
  • Outpatient Stress Testing

Non-Patient Care Elective Rotations

Residents are given the option of doing 1 or 2 -week free choice elective in a non-patient care rotation. Elective Choices include:

  • Endotracheal intubation
  • Radiology
  • Pathology
  • Palliative Care

Off-Site Elective Rotations

Once the corresponding inpatient equivalent is completed, a resident is allowed to take an off-site elective in the same specialty for a maximum duration of 4 weeks. The residents are required to complete the application to the off-site program and state permit requirements prior to the approval of the elective. This is on hold during the Covid pandemic per State and Corporate Regulations.
